In 2024, South Carolina emerged as the leading destination for one-way U-Haul movers, marking its first time at the top of the U-Haul Growth Index. This shift ended Texas's three-year streak as the number one growth state. The top five states attracting new residents were South Carolina, Texas, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. Conversely, California experienced the highest net loss of movers, ranking 50th for the fifth consecutive year. 

The U-Haul Growth Index, which analyzes over 2.5 million one-way U-Haul transactions annually, reflects broader migration trends influenced by factors such as cost of living, job opportunities, and quality of life. John "J.T." Taylor, U-Haul International president, noted that migration to the Southeast and Southwest persists as families assess these factors when relocating.
